Welcome to the second part of my posts which will walk down memory lane of my younger years in life – highlighting some of my absolute favourite games growing up! If you haven’t seen part one then check it out below:
Grandia! Enough said about this amazing game! Okay maybe I will do some explaining about this game, for those who are either too young or for some sad reason never crossed path with this amazing game! Grandia is your typical turn-based role playing game – similar to your classic Final Fantasy but with characters who are charming and a story that embraces a sense of adventure. The story follows the main character Justin, who is a young determined adventurer (like most characters in games from this time – too young to be leaving home and fighting monsters, uncovering huge plots by villains who are essentially grown-ups). Justin takes his best friend – who is a small girl with a strange puff ball she chucks at people – and then meets the love of his life, who is a kick ass adventurer! The combat is great, tactical elements force you to consider your actions, especially on your big boss fights. My favourite part of Grandia is the ability progression system. You can attach elements to your heroes, and the mixture of elements unlocks different abilities as you play through the story. This title is currently on the switch ….so go and buy it!
Ahhhh the Dreamcast….. lots of people didn’t like you but I thought you held some truly classic games! When I think back to my time with the Dreamcast, Powerstone is the first one that jumps to my mind. Powerstone is a fighting game, where your hero brawled against other wacky fighters, whilst desperately grabbing at any item that fell near you to help pummel the others around you. If you are lucky you could get your hands on the powerstones, which when collected would turn you into a kick-ass super powered champion, who at the end could unleash a crazy powerful attack on your foes. The niche of this game, was the item system. Every item that you used or collected while fighting was kept, and later could be used to craft all new items. This was my favourite part of the game – messing with different combinations, trying to figure out the combinations like a wacky scientist. No matter how much I played this game – I don’t think I ever managed to unlock all the items this game held…there were just so many.
Monster rancher… a semi-popular anime from the 90s and a game that was birthed from Japan – following from the hugely popular monster raising games such as Pokemon and Digimon. Monster Rancher was game where you were tasked with saving a down-trodden ranch from complete failure, whilst sparking your own career in the Monster Raising world. I think this game is very unique in lots of ways! First of all, the way you gain your monster’s is through putting random discs into your console and the console will read the disc and determine what monster you would get. The best part was that it wasn’t random – I am not sure till this day how the system worked but different discs hid rare monsters for you to find. This did spark me and my brother to drag all the discs around the house and testing them all out, and how lucky we were that our Mum had lots of music on CD for us to try. Then after you got your monster, you took them back to your farm and train them in stats and send them off on trips (where they often failed and could sometimes die 😦 ) to gain new and powerful moves. Once you were ready, you would then pimp your monster out in tournaments, where as always with these games, you would fight them against others for money and glory. The sad part of this games, was when your monsters time in the world ended and they would sadly die…..but if you caught it early you could freeze them and save your monster and use them to challenge your friends! How I wish they would remake this game….
